Do you have melasma or think you might? Would you like to learn more about it? In this video, I am going to discuss melasma in depth including its pathophysiology (the chemical mechanisms that work against our body’s best interests) and skin care tips to help deal with it effectively. There is a lot of information in this video, and I only mention a few points in the description to show you the overarching complexity of melasma. To find the products that I use in my practice to treat melasma click here https://www.drbaileyskincare.com/ulti... First, what is Melasma? Melasma is the hyperpigmentation of the face. It appears as symmetric blotchy brown marks due to an abnormality in the skin’s processing of hormones. Although this is called more colloquially as, the “mask of pregnancy,” it can happen to women and men. Other key points to know… Melasma is more common in women and often shows up when hormones start (puberty) and fades away when hormones end (menopause). Also, it typically doesn’t form below the jawbone. Types of hyperpigmentation that are NOT melasma: Acne scars, also known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation; Hyperpigmentation created by dandruff along your nasolabial folds (smile lines); Lichen Planus Pigmentosus, gray-brown blotches that require a trip to your dermatologist; Allergic reactions to medication including sun-induced allergic reactions to medication; and Rashes. For ways you can address melasma, start watching at 8:20. You’ll find I discuss Glycolic Acid, Retin A, skin hydration, complete skin care best practices, and other over-the-counter and botanical options. It’s also important to manage/block all forms of light when preventing melasma from occurring. I hope this information was helpful, and if you know someone with melasma, please consider sharing this video with them. Have a wonderful day, Dr. Cynthia Bailey P.s. Here is the article I mention towards the end of this video, you’ll find several products I recommend for those with melasma. https://www.drbaileyskincare.com/info...
