Before discussing the amazing powerhouses of antioxidants and skin care, have you heard of free radicals or oxidative stress? If these are new terms for you, then you need to pay attention because they are both bad news when it comes to your body’s health. Oxidative Stress is your body’s inability to manage free radicals. Free radicals are deadly little body-damaging assassins that cause inflammation across your body, acne, immune dysfunction, damage to your DNA and damage to other structures on a cellular level. Plus, oxidative stress is associated with cancer, heart disease, skin diseases, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer's, and vitiligo. Notice that free radicals affect much more than just your skin and this list keeps growing! Your next question is likely “what causes free radicals to form?” Excellent question! Free radicals arise from a number of factors including: lack of exercise, imbalanced diet, low levels of sleep, chemicals like pollution and cigarette smoke, UV exposure, extreme temperatures, disease, illness, and stress. Notice that stress, disease and illness are contributing factors AND symptoms of free radicals. It’s a vicious cycle and one that’s hard to escape! This is where antioxidants can help our bodies. Antioxidants provide additional resources for managing free radicals and combating oxidative stress. You will often find them by eating the rainbow of fruits and veggies and (especially in) berries and green tea (my favorite!). However, our digestive system can only absorb so many antioxidants so another way for our bodies to gain antioxidants is through application of special topical creams such as Green Tea Antioxidant Skin Therapy. This is an cream that I have found to work wonders with a variety of skin types and conditions. It is one of our most popular products.
