What do antioxidants do for your skin to fight sun damage? If that’s what you’re wondering, than that’s a great question! To explain, let’s start by discussing how sun damage happens on the microscopic level. (We’re going to get kinda science-y, but I’ll make it easy!) First, UV-rays hit your skin with energy. This gets transferred to the various parts of your skin capable of absorbing this energy. The main two structures to absorb the energy are melanin and nucleic acids. Melanin is a natural, but limited, sun-protection mechanism. Nucleic acids include your DNA and RNA, which you don’t want altered by UV-ray energy! Energy from UV-rays absorbed by your skin (a.k.a. free radicals) is chemically unstable and desperately seeking to pair. Often, these free radicals will steal from your DNA to satisfy their desperation. This causes a damage called Pyrimidine Dimers which can collect in the skin and cause more damage. However, if antioxidants are present in the skin, they can prevent this damage and potential cascade effect. Second, free radicals also play a role in the loss and damaging of collagen, a.k.a. skin aging. They activate matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) which inhibits the formation of good collagen, and this snowballs with other aging-effects in the skin. Now, you’re starting to see why sun damage is so serious and how it works. If you’re next question is, how do we deal with this? Then you’re asking another great question! Our skin has natural mechanisms in place to clean up the mayhem left by free radicals, but they are limited and their processes are slow. Applying topical doses of antioxidants can greatly assist and speed up these cleaning mechanisms. But, be careful when buying antioxidants because not all are good for your skin. I recommend the use of green tea, vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E. However, vitamin E doesn’t play well with all skin types. If you notice any rashes forming where you apply the product, be sure to visit your physician.
